If there’s one thing the pandemic has ensured, it’s that we never take anything for granted again. Eating ‘interesting’ food on the streets, being able to wander aimlessly in malls, sitting down for a fine meal with your beloveds have all become a source of throw backs for us. Even a regular jog around your dwelling seems like such a luxury.
That said, do you even remember road trips? The windows rolled down, a deep-chill, low-fi track soothing your nerves, the wind howling as you swoosh past! Road trips allow you a few hours where you have nothing at all to do, except while it away. It’s a time to truly be your best version and relax.
Here are some of the road trips, we’ve swearing by. These are the topmost ones that feature on our post-pandemic agenda.
Coorg via Bangalore
Approx time: 9 hours.
Coorg today boasts of gorgeous hotels, a monastery, silk museums and some more sights to see around it. So, from your main destination come down to Bangalore, and take a road trip to Coorg and Mysore. Think rich oxygen, lush greenery till as far as your eyes can see, and local food that rivals any fine dine you’ve eaten. Coorg offers fresh spices, ayurvedic cosmetics and home stays that offer tea-coffee and conversations. This will be a destination you will keep coming back to!
Managlore to Mudumalai Tiger Resort via Ooty
Approx time: 10 hours.
The Mudumalai National Park was established in 1940, making it one of the oldest homes to several vulnerable species. Indian elephant, Gaur, Bengal Tiger, Indian leopard and 266 endangered species of birds live here. The tiger reserve is about 240 km from Bangalore and 90 km from Mysore. It is 68 km from Ooty and 124 km from Calicut. You will cross Bangalore-Ooty on this road trip. Straddling the Ooty-Mysore interstate highway, do keep an eye out for the right road. Lest you end up on the one steep ghat road with 36 hairpin bends.
Ahmedabad to Jaisalmer
Approx time: 13 hours
A long-ish road trip that you might need more than one break for! Station once in Mount Abu for doing touristy things along the way too! Alternatively called the Golden City, the formerly princely state boasts of forts, citadels, temples and palaces. Jaisalmer, the third largest district in Rajasthan experiences extreme climate, so visiting during fall/winter would be recommended. With roads like butter and frequent food pit stops on the way serving authentic cuisine, this road trip is a joy!
Tawang to Guwahati
Approx time: 15 hours
A land so scenic, a terrain so gorgeous! Accept the fact that you’d be taking a lot of stops along the way. Not just for the photography, but to gorge on food, visit monasteries, temples, hills and cemeteries. The caves, villages and drizzles, all make this road trip, one of the best and unchartered ones in India. So, get going before you’re forced to share road space with others. You could also extend your road trip to include Shillong or Cherrapunji.
Almora to Mussoorie via Haridwar and Rishikesh
Approx time: 12 hours
While Almora to Mussoorie might be a 12 hour drive, but rest assured you might just need a few days. With so many prime destinations arriving on the way, it would be a folly to give them a miss. With Nainital, Haridwar and Rishikesh on the way, prime yourself for a gorgeous darshan of the Ganges, winding roads leading to hilly terrains, and exemplary food in the tiniest of nooks. The roads could be a bother in which case only gorge on juices and chocolates. Descending clouds and the crisp air of mountains convene to get you falling in love with this postcard beauty!
